…it’s always a bummer to lose your wallet. but it’s a special bummer to lose your wallet when you’re in Zambia. Ten business days of waiting for your debit/credit cards turns into a month or two, and your driver’s license coming from the DMV is pretty much a lost cause. (Luckily for me I got a new driver’s license about a year ago when I thought I had lost mine, but it was recovered)
I was out on the motorbike for the day, and after fueling up in Kalingalinga (since you know where it is…) I rode out to Kafue road, which is on the opposite side of town, and then finally realized that somewhere in between the two places, my wallet fell out of my pocket. I retraced my tracks, of course, and went all the way to the filling station, talked to the attendant, who hadn’t seen anything, and then came home to cancel my cards. I sulked for a moment while eating lunch prepared by Staz, listened to the new Zambikes radio advertisement, and then called my credit union and bank to cancel thte cards and get replacements, which is actually not a hassle at all.
Next, I logged onto Amazon.com to buy an external hard drive to replace mine that broke, and I realized I don’t have any credit cards right now.
Awesome.

Back in June 2008 the Polaroid Company officially stopped production of their instant polaroid films of all types in order to join the 21st century and move their company toward digital photography. This announcement was met, of course, with groans from those of us who love taking polaroid pictures, and people like me stockpiled this film that would soon be extinct.
Enter The Impossible Project. This is a company that has acquired Polaroid’s old machinery and is devoted to updating the old technology and creating a new film for old cameras. This is SUCH good news and I look forward to years and years of oldschool photography with this film, thanks to The Impossible Project.
If by any chance you don’t own a polaroid camera, I would recommend you pick one up and begin the quest for your inner self through the use of ye olde technology.

I guess the writing thing comes and goes in waves, maybe a lot like other things in life. I’ll politely apologize, thanking you for bugging me to write more and move on.
This last weekend we took a trip up to Chililabomwe (“chilli the bomb way” as it was affectionately dubbed) for the US-Rwanda soccer game. As seen in my previous couple of posts, the US won, and the game was really really fun to be at. People were pretty enthusiastic, but pretty Zambian and relaxed much of the time. There was a group of Rwandans near us with face paints, strange outfits, and witchdoctor pots of boiling something… The worst part about being near them was they had those long plastic trumpets that people blow at sporting events… they were REALLY loud, and they blew them literally the entire 90 minute game.
A highlight was seeing the Zambian President in person… he went onto the field for the national anthem and to shake the hands of the players. He was dressed in the same shirt that I had bought for the occasion (green polyester polo shirt with black, red and yellow-orange stripes down the side) and a scarf with the same colors on it. He’s quite a looker.
Back to work this week, and I’m putting together the “production plan” for the Zambulance and Zamcart… Step by step instructions for making one.
Hope all is well with everyone out there. Stay tuned for some new photo albums and more posts.
